FALL RIVER – The Lizzie Borden House in Fall River has landed on USA Today’s Top 10 list of the best haunted hotels in the country, even beating out the setting of “The Shining.”
Borden was accused of killing her father Andrew and stepmother Abby in the home by repeatedly whacking them with a hatchet in 1892. The 32-year-old Borden was the obvious suspect, but she was stunningly found not guilty in a murder trial that captivated the nation.
Despite her acquittal, Borden has long been seen in popular culture as one of America’s most famous killers, “48 Hours” reported in a 2020 special titled “Lizzie Borden Took an Axe.”
The house where the gruesome murders happened is now run as a bed & breakfast. Visitors can tour the six-bedroom home and even stay in the room where Abby was killed.
“In the modern era, ghost hunters are welcome to book a stay in the very home where the murders took place,” USA Today wrote. “Past visitors have experienced flickering lights and disembodied laughter throughout their stay.”
Thrillist previously named the Lizzie Borden House the creepiest place to visit in all of Massachusetts. It was sold in in 2021 for $1.8 million to US Ghost Adventures.
The Lizzie Borden House finished just ahead of the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, which inspired Stephen King’s “The Shining.”
Coming in first on USA Today’s ranking was the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The hotel used to be a cancer hospital and is rumored to be inhabited by numerous ghosts.
The runner-up was the Fainting Goat Island Inn in Nicholas, New York, a former railroad hotel famous for ghostly encounters.
